How to work remote...

…while travelling in Mexico

Working from home is not always easy, you’re mostly sitting in front of your laptop for hours, without seeing anyone…that’s one of the reasons why we decided to leave our comfort to travel the world and meet some other digital nomads. If it is not common in big cities such as Paris or Berlin, there’s plenty of remote workers travelling various countries, at the moment we speak.

So after Australia, Sri Lanka, Bali, Morocco…we decided to land to Mexico, a highly contrasted country, full of diversity, delicious food, and majestic waves to surf. If you ever decide to go, you might land in Mexico City, or CDMX as they call it, a huge city full of almost 11 millions people. But don’t get scared away too fast, even tho you’ll never be able to see it all, the capital has a lot to offer. Some districts such as Roma, Condesa or Coyoacán are very green, quiet and chill, perfect to have a working session in a nice bar or discover the city walking around and stopping for some quesadillas break.

But the city is not exactly what you’re looking for, right? Either of us!

“Mexico’s lifestyle is all about slowing it down, drinking coconuts and watching the best sunsets of your life.”

After CDMX there’s plenty of destinations you could be going for in Mexico: Nayarit, Baja California, Tulum, Oaxaca, Chiapas, San Miguel de Allende…but one of our favorite destination is Puerto Escondido. Famous for the summer swell hitting the coast, it offers gigantic waves up to 7 or 8 meters, for the pleasure of big waves surfers from all over the world, and the speechless crowd staring on the beach. Puerto used to be a small fishermen village, very calm and not so well-known, but since couple of years, it’s one of the trendiest destination in Mexico for its bohemian culture and the cool lifestyle it provides. You rarely go under 25 degrees, there’s breathtaking beaches, and you’ll find amazing restaurants in town. But how much does it coast? Well, let’s say that renting a decent apartment nearby the beach for a month would cost you around 800 euros for 2 people. Not that bad huh? Have a look at Casa Olas de Estrellas, Sebastian will surely take a very good care of you and show you around Puerto. With a bit of luck, he’ll even take you to some secret spots to see massive cocodrilos in the wild…

You’re looking to have a nice dinner after chilling in Puerto? Count around 7 or 8 euros in a regular restaurant. We personally recommend “Litchi” a Thai restaurant or Chicama, a Peruvian restaurant offering the best tartares in town.

Only “problem”? The internet connection is clearly not outstanding…hard one for a digital nomad, but fortunately there’s still some options around. For example: Selina. A coworking place offering monthly rents for about 120 euros / month. It’s the only reliable spot in town, but you’ll be sure to meet plenty of digital nomads ready to discuss or go out for a Coronita after a good work session. You could go chill in La Punta or watch the sunset in Carizalillo…

If you’re looking for a good spot to buy a hight quality surfboard we recommend you to have look at Ceviche, you’ll find everything from old school twin fishes to performance thruster and easy beautiful longboards.

But if it’s not Puerto, doesn’t matter where you’ll end up in Mexico, we’re pretty sure you’ll have a blast and create unforgettable memories. It’s definitely part of our “To do list” and we can only recommend it !
